The stories of Aruni and Uttanka illustrate the special relationship that ought to exist between the guru and the disciple (shishya). The faith of the student in his teacher is matched by the latter's perception of his pupil's abilities. This explains why Gautama singled out Uttanka for tests more arduous than those he imposed on his other disciples.
